והוה גברא חד מרמתא מתלמידי נביאיא מטורא דבית אפרים ושמיה אלקנה בר ירחם בר אליהוא בר תוחו בר צוף גברא פליג חולק בקודשיא בטורא דבית אפרים:
aprym dbyth bTwra bqwdshya khwlq plyg gbra tswp br thwkhw br alyhwa br yrkhm br alqnh wshmyh aprym dbyth mTwra nbyaya mthlmydy mrmtha khd gbra whwh
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

וליה תרתין נשין שום חדא חנה ושום תנייתא פננה והוה לפננה בנין ולחנה לית בנין:
bnyn lyth wlkhnh bnyn lpnnh whwh pnnh thnyytha wshwm khnh khda shwm nshyn thrthyn wlyh
He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

וסליק גברא ההוא מקרתיה מזמן מועד למועד למסגד ולדבחא קדם יי צבאות בשלה ותמן תרין בני עלי חפני ופנחס משמשין קדם יי:
yy qdm mshmshyn wpnkhs khpny ely bny thryn wthmn bshlh tsbawth yy qdm wldbkha lmsgd lmwed mwed mzmn mqrthyh hhwa gbra wslyq
This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.

והוה יום מועדא ודבח אלקנה ויהב לפננה אתתיה ולכל בנהא ובנתהא חולקין:
khwlqyn wbnthha bnha wlkl aththyh lpnnh wyhb alqnh wdbkh mweda ywm whwh
When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters;

ולחנה יהב חולק חד בחיר ארי ית חנה רחים ומן קדם יי אתמנע מנה ולד:
wld mnh athmne yy qdm wmn rkhym khnh yth ary bkhyr khd khwlq yhb wlkhnh
but he gave a double portion to Hannah, for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.

ומצהבא לה צרתה אף מרגזא לה בדיל לאקניותה ארי אתמנע מן קדם יי מנה ולד:
wld mnh yy qdm mn athmne ary laqnywthh bdyl lh mrgza ap tsrthh lh wmtshba
Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.

וכן יעביד שנא בשנא בזמן מסקה לבית מקדשא דיי כן מרגזא לה ובכיא ולא אכלת:
aklth wla wbkya lh mrgza kn dyy mqdsha lbyth msqh bzmn bshna shna yebyd wkn
So year by year, when she went up to Yahweh’s house, her rival provoked her. Therefore she wept, and didn’t eat.

ואמר לה אלקנה בעלה חנה למה את בכיא ולמה לא תיכלי ולמה באיש ליך ליבך הלא רעותי טבא ליך מעשרא בנין:
bnyn meshra lyk Tba rewthy hla lybk lyk baysh wlmh thykly la wlmh bkya ath lmh khnh belh alqnh lh wamr
Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

וקמת חנה בתר דאכלת בשלה ובתר דשתיאת ועלי כהנא יתיב על כורסיה על מזוזי בסטר סיפא דהיכלא דיי:
dyy dhykla sypa bsTr mzwzy el kwrsyh el ythyb khna wely dshthyath wbthr bshlh daklth bthr khnh wqmth
So Hannah rose up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of Yahweh’s temple.

והיא מרירת נפש ומצליא קדם יי ומבכא בכיא:
bkya wmbka yy qdm wmtslya npsh mryrth whya
She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, weeping bitterly.

וקיימת קיים ואמרת יי צבאות אם מגלא גלי קדמך סגוף אמתך ויעול דכרני קדמך ולא תרחיק ית אמתך ותתן לאמתך בר בגו בני אנשא ואמסריניה דיהי משמש קדם יי כל יומי חיוהי ומרות אנש לא תהי עלוהי:
elwhy thhy la ansh wmrwth khywhy ywmy kl yy qdm mshmsh dyhy wamsrynyh ansha bny bgw br lamthk wththn amthk yth thrkhyq wla qdmk dkrny wyewl amthk sgwp qdmk gly mgla am tsbawth yy wamrth qyym wqyymth
She vowed a vow, and said, “Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.”

והוה מדאסגיאת לצלאה קדם יי ועלי אוריך לה עד דתפסוק:
dthpswq ed lh awryk wely yy qdm ltslah mdasgyath whwh
As she continued praying before Yahweh, Eli saw her mouth.

וחנה היא מצליא בלבה לחוד ספותהא ניידן וקלה לא משתמע וחשבה עלי כאתתא רויא:
rwya kaththa ely wkhshbh mshthme la wqlh nyydn spwthha lkhwd blbh mtslya hya wkhnh
Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.

ואמר לה עלי עד אימתי את משתטיא הלא תפיגין ית חמריך מניך:
mnyk khmryk yth thpygyn hla mshthTya ath aymthy ed ely lh wamr
Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Get rid of your wine!”

ואתיבת חנה ואמרת לא רבוני אתתא עקת רוח אנא וחמר חדת ועתיק לא אשתיתי ואמרית עולבן נפשי בצלו קדם יי:
yy qdm btslw npshy ewlbn wamryth ashthythy la wethyq khdth wkhmr ana rwkh eqth aththa rbwny la wamrth khnh wathybth
Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.

לא תכלים ית אמתך קדם בת רשעא ארי מסגי אקניותי וארגיזותי אורכית בצלו עד כען:
ken ed btslw awrkyth wargyzwthy aqnywthy msgy ary rshea bth qdm amthk yth thklym la
Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation.”

ואתיב עלי ואמר אזילי לשלם ואלהא ישראל יתן ית בעותיך דבעית מן קדמוהי:
qdmwhy mn dbeyth bewthyk yth ythn yshral walha lshlm azyly wamr ely wathyb
Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.”

ואמרת תשכח אמתך רחמין בעינך ואזלת אתתא לאורחה ואכלת ואפין בישין לא הוו לה עוד:
ewd lh hww la byshyn wapyn waklth lawrkhh aththa wazlth beynk rkhmyn amthk thshkkh wamrth
She said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate; and her facial expression wasn’t sad any more.

ואקדימו בצפרא וסגידו קדם יי ותבו ואתו לביתהון לרמתא וידע אלקנה ית חנה אתתיה ועל דכרנה קדם יי:
yy qdm dkrnh wel aththyh khnh yth alqnh wyde lrmtha lbythhwn wathw wthbw yy qdm wsgydw btspra waqdymw
They rose up in the morning early and worshiped Yahweh, then returned and came to their house to Ramah. Then Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.

והוה לזמן משלם יומיא ועדיאת חנה וילידת בר וקרת ית שמיה שמואל ארי אמרת מן קדם יי שאלתיה:
shalthyh yy qdm mn amrth ary shmwal shmyh yth wqrth br wylydth khnh wedyath ywmya mshlm lzmn whwh
When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of Yahweh.”

וסליק גברא אלקנה וכל אנש ביתיה לדבחא קדם יי ית דבח מועדיא ולשלמא ית נדריה:
ndryh yth wlshlma mwedya dbkh yth yy qdm ldbkha bythyh ansh wkl alqnh gbra wslyq
The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice and his vow.

וחנה לא סליקת ארי אמרת לבעלה עד דיתחסיל רביא ואיתיניה ואתחזי קדם יי ויתיב תמן עד עלמא:
elma ed thmn wythyb yy qdm wathkhzy waythynyh rbya dythkhsyl ed lbelh amrth ary slyqth la wkhnh
But Hannah didn’t go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever.”

ואמר לה אלקנה בעלה עבידי כדתקין בעיניכי אוריכי עד דתחסלין יתיה ברם יקים יי ית פתגמוהי ואוריכת אתתא ואוניקת ית ברה עד דחסילת יתיה:
ythyh dkhsylth ed brh yth wawnyqth aththa wawrykth pthgmwhy yth yy yqym brm ythyh dthkhslyn ed awryky beynyky kdthqyn ebydy belh alqnh lh wamr
Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word.” So the woman waited and nursed her son until she weaned him.

ואסקתיה עמה כד חסלתיה בתורין תלתא ומכילתא חדא דקימחא וגרב דחמר ואיתיתיה לבית מקדשא דיי לשלו ורביא הוה יניק:
ynyq hwh wrbya lshlw dyy mqdsha lbyth waythythyh dkhmr wgrb dqymkha khda wmkyltha thltha bthwryn khslthyh kd emh wasqthyh
When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a container of wine, and brought him to Yahweh’s house in Shiloh. The child was young.
25
ונכיסו ית תורא ואיתיאו ית רביא לות עלי:
ely lwth rbya yth waythyaw thwra yth wnkysw
They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.
26
ואמרת בבעו רבוני חיי נפשך רבוני אנא אתתא דאתעתדת עמך הכא לצלאה קדם יי:
yy qdm ltslah hka emk dathethdth aththa ana rbwny npshk khyy rbwny bbew wamrth
She said, “Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh.
27
על רביא הדין צליתי ויהב יי לי ית בעותי דבעית מן קדמוהי:
qdmwhy mn dbeyth bewthy yth ly yy wyhb tslythy hdyn rbya el
I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.
